Meaning of this olive pastis sign
As you can slightly see, we owe this vintage metal sign on the Olive pastis to the designer Marc who created it in 1936. This brightly colored image depicts a “loudmouth” captain serving the aperitif, giving it a convivial appearance. Let’s note an element of Marseille’s history in the background: the ferry point which, at the time, allowed a gondola to circulate while avoiding disturbing traffic. Although it was built in 1905, it was completely destroyed in 1944 by the Germans during the Second World War. On the menu of this image: sunshine, conviviality, happiness, and above all… aperitif! This advertising sign is based on the symbols typically associated with pastis. Through shimmering colors and a lively line, a caricature that at first glance lacks finesse suddenly becomes pleasant and likeable. What makes all the difference here is the talent of the designer. This vintage decorative metal plaque will be an ideal gift idea for anyone who doesn’t skimp on aperitifs!
