Description of this Duel Poster

Duel is a 1971 American action and thriller television film directed by Steven Spielberg. It features a businessman, played by Dennis Weaver, who drives across California to meet a client. However, he finds himself pursued and terrorized by the driver of a semi-truck, of whom we don’t see much. The screenplay by Richard Matheson is an adaptation of his own short story of the same name.

Produced by Universal Television, Duel originally aired as part of the ABC Movie of the Week series on November 13, 1971. It was later given an international theatrical release in an extended version that included scenes shot after the film’s initial television broadcast. The film received generally positive reviews from critics, with Spielberg’s direction being particularly praised. It has since been recognized as an influential cult classic, one of the greatest films ever made for television.

Back on the road, the truck catches up to and passes Mann, then blocks his path every time he attempts to pass. After taunting Mann in this manner for some time, the driver waves him through, causing Mann to nearly hit an oncoming vehicle. Mann eventually passes the truck by taking an unpaved turnoff next to the highway, then glances out his back window and waves it through. The truck slows briefly, then begins following Mann’s car at increasingly higher speeds, the underpowered Plymouth barely managing to keep up with the truck. Mann veers off the road, loses control of his car, and sideswipes a fence in front of a restaurant, while the truck continues on. Mann enters the restaurant to compose himself. On his way back from the restroom, he sees the truck parked outside. He studies the customers, identifies one wearing the same type of boots as the truck driver, and confronts him. The customer, confused and offended, beats Mann and leaves in another truck. The pursuing truck leaves a few moments later, indicating that its driver never entered the restaurant.

Mann continues on and stops to help a disabled school bus. In doing so, his front bumper gets wedged under the bus’s rear bumper. The truck appears in a tunnel below the road, causing Mann to panic. He and the bus driver free their car, and Mann flees as the truck helps push the school bus onto the road.

Mann stops at a railroad crossing and waits for a Southern Pacific freight train to pass. The truck appears from behind and pushes Mann’s car toward the oncoming train. Mann presses the brake and shifts into reverse. As soon as the train passes, Mann presses the accelerator, crosses the tracks, and drives off the road. The truck continues on its way, and Mann slowly follows.

To create more distance between himself and the truck, Mann drives very slowly, while other motorists pass him. Once again, he encounters the truck, which has stopped on the shoulder of the road and is waiting for him. The truck stops in front of him and begins to harass him again.

Mann stops at a gas station where there is an animal attraction, including rattlesnakes. He calls the police from a phone booth at the station. During the call, the truck drives through the booth and destroys it. Mann narrowly escapes and is chased by the truck around the animal attraction. He manages to get into his car and speed away. As he rounded a bend, he pulled off the road and hid behind an embankment to let the truck pass.

After a long wait, Mann set off again, but the truck was waiting for him at the end of the road. Mann tried to speed through, but the truck swerved across the road and blocked him. He called for help from an elderly couple in a car, but they drove off when the truck reversed toward them at high speed. Determined to defend himself, Mann sped past the truck, which resumed pursuit. Mann swerved toward what appeared to be a police car before realizing the vehicle belonged to a pest control company. Mann continued down a mountain road, aware that the truck would be unable to keep up with him on a slope. Suddenly, the radiator hose on Mann’s car ruptured, causing the engine to overheat and fail. Losing speed, he barely made it to the top. He then descended the slope in neutral, followed by the truck. Mann spins out of control and slams sideways into a cliff face. He manages to restart his car and narrowly escapes being run over by the truck. Mann drives up a dirt road to the edge of a canyon and turns to face the truck. Mann presses the accelerator with his briefcase and steers his car toward the oncoming truck, pulling out at the last moment. The truck hits the car, which bursts into flames, obscuring the driver’s view. The truck pushes the burning car over the edge of the cliff, then continues over the edge itself, and both vehicles crash into the canyon. Blood is seen dripping inside the truck’s cab. Above the wreckage, Mann gloats over his victory as the truck burns. Mann then sits exhausted on the edge of the cliff and throws rocks toward the wrecked truck as the sun sets.
