Description of this Léon Poster

Léon is a 1994 French-English action thriller film written and directed by Luc Besson. It stars Jean Reno and Gary Oldman, and features Natalie Portman in her feature film debut. The plot centers on Léon (Reno), a professional hitman who reluctantly takes in twelve-year-old Mathilda Lando (Portman) after her family is murdered by Norman Stansfield (Oldman), a corrupt Drug Enforcement Administration agent. Léon and Mathilda form an unusual relationship, as she becomes his protégé and learns the trade of a hitman. The film was distributed by Gaumont Buena Vista International on September 14, 1994, and received positive reviews.

Leon is an Italian hitman (or “cleaner,” as he calls himself) in New York City’s Little Italy, working for a mafioso named “Old Tony.” One day, Leon meets Mathilda Lando, a lonely twelve-year-old girl who lives with her dysfunctional family in an apartment down the hall from Leon and has stopped attending her school for troubled girls. Mathilda’s abusive father draws the ire of corrupt DEA agents, who paid him to hide cocaine in his apartment. After discovering that he was stealing the cocaine, the DEA agents storm the building, led by their leader, the elegantly dressed drug addict Norman Stansfield. During the raid, Stansfield murders Mathilda’s family while she is out shopping. Upon her return, Mathilda realizes what has happened just in time to continue on to Leon’s apartment, where he is reluctant to take her in.

Mathilda quickly discovers that Leon is a hitman. She begs him to take care of her and teach her his skills, as she wants to avenge the murder of her four-year-old brother. At first, Leon is disturbed by her presence and considers murdering her in her sleep, but he eventually trains Mathilda and shows her how to use various weapons. In exchange, she does her shopping, cleans her apartment, and teaches her to read. Mathilda admires Leon and quickly develops a crush on him, often telling him that she loves him, but he does not reciprocate.

When Leon is out of town, Mathilda fills a bag with weapons from Leon’s collection and sets out to kill Stansfield. She sneaks into the DEA offices posing as a delivery girl and is ambushed by Stansfield in the restroom. One of his men arrives and informs her that Leon killed Malky, one of the corrupt DEA agents, in Chinatown that very morning. Leon, after discovering her plan in a note left for him, rescues Mathilda, killing two more of Stansfield’s men in the process. An enraged Stansfield confronts Tony, who is tortured for information on Leon’s whereabouts.

Leon tells Mathilda how he became a hitman. When Leon was eighteen years old in Italy, he fell in love with a girl from a wealthy family, while Leon’s family was poor. The two planned to elope, but when the girl’s father discovered them, he killed her in a fit of anger. Leon killed her father in revenge and fled to New York, where he met Tony and trained to become a hitman. Later, as Mathilda returned home from shopping, an NYPD hit squad sent by Stansfield captured her and infiltrated Leon’s apartment. Leon ambushed the squad and rescued Mathilda. Leon created a quick escape route for Mathilda by blowing a hole in an air shaft. He tells her he loves her and that she should meet him at Tony’s house in an hour, moments before the ESU team blows up the apartment. In the chaos, a wounded Leon sneaks out of the building, disguised as a wounded ESU officer. He goes unnoticed by everyone except Stansfield, who follows and shoots him in the back. As Leon dies, he drives a grenade pin into Stansfield’s arm.

Mathilda goes to Tony and tries to convince him to hire her, but Tony adamantly refuses to hire a twelve-year-old and tells Mathilda that Leon told him to give him his money if anything happened to her. Tony gives Mathilda $100 spending money and sends her back to school, where the principal readmits her after Mathilda reveals what happened. Mathilda goes to a field near the school to plant Leon’s houseplant, as she had told him, to “give it roots.”
