Description of this Poster Les Sous-doués
The school year at the private school Cours Louis VIX in Versailles ends with a disastrous result for headmistress Lucie Jumaucourt: all the students in the final year class have failed. But instead of sadness, enthusiasm dominates among the students, as failing the baccalaureate is a tradition for some: Baptiste Lavalle, known as “Bebel,” for example, failed the exam for the fourth time. This new school year also shows no improvement in the students’ academic results and attitudes toward the baccalaureate. Lucie Jumaucourt has nevertheless committed to ensuring that all students have their baccalaureate in their pockets by the end of the school year. She replaces the attractive PE teacher Marilyn with the giant Bruce, who also serves as a threat in the event of misbehavior in class. All classrooms are under video surveillance, and even smoking in the restrooms is made difficult by smoke detectors. However, thanks to modern technology, the students still manage to do as they please: Video surveillance becomes a farce thanks to the broadcast of home movies, chemistry class becomes a very foggy affair due to the incorrect dosage of chemicals, and math class becomes a challenge for Léon, the hard-of-hearing math teacher, due to seemingly mute answers. Instead of school, the students prefer to devote themselves to their romantic relationships. For example, Bebel tries in vain to snatch his girlfriend Caroline away from Julien, and ends up in bed with Jeanne. Jeanne announces shortly afterward to her classmates that she is pregnant.
The chaos in the classroom is alleviated by the arrival of a new student: Gaston Pourquier is already retired and wants to fulfill his lifelong dream of getting his baccalaureate. But the preliminary exam for the baccalaureate leaves Lucie Jumaucourt in despair, as even the top student in the class only gets a little over a quarter of the possible points. Yet she admits to being satisfied in front of the class and introduces the students to her new teacher the next day: a learning machine from the United States, which distributes blows for each wrong answer, but rewards correct answers with candy. While the students initially submit to the machine, they then work on new ways to prevent learning. After a first bomb threat that angers the commissioner, who is already annoyed by the students, the police are not fooled by another alert. Bebel and his accomplices immediately build a real small bomb. The plans are brought to the attention of real terrorists, who build an identical large bomb. By the greatest of coincidences, the terrorists’ bomb ends up at the school and the small bomb at the embassy in Abu-Yamen. When the police refuse to believe the students’ story about the real bomb, an explosion occurs and the school building is completely devastated. In court, the students claim not to be criminals, and the judge wants to believe them on one condition: if they all pass the baccalaureate, the case is dismissed. If they fail, they will have to serve their sentences. The commissioner can act as an invigilator during the exams, and he is delighted. Thanks to excessive cheating and extravagant variations, all the students pass the written and oral exams, with Jeanne even giving birth to her daughter during the written exam. The commissioner is revolted by the injustice of the world.
Ten years later, the former students meet again. All have succeeded in their lives in different ways. In front of the meeting place, the half-crazy commissioner directs traffic. Bebel summons him to meet them and they all play one last trick on him: as he is about to blow out the candles on a birthday cake, the cake explodes, leaving him decorated with cream.
