Description of this A Nightmare on Elm Street Poster

In March 1981, in the fictional town of Springwood, Ohio, 15-year-old Tina Gray has a nightmare in which she is chased through a dark boiler room by a figure carrying knife blades in his right hand. The moment the dark figure reaches her, she wakes up screaming and finds she has four long gashes down the front of her nightgown, which match exactly what happened in her dream.

The next day, she learns from her friend Nancy Thompson, who also lives on Elm Street, that she had the exact same dream. The following night, Nancy and her friend Glen Lantz spend the night at Tina’s house to reassure her. But her own friend, Rod Lane, convinces her to sleep with him in her mother’s room. That night, Tina has another nightmare in which the killer captures her and brutally kills her. In reality, Rod sees his bleeding friend fighting with an invisible man, the girl climbing up the wall and rolling along the bedroom ceiling, against the laws of nature, and writhing until Tina falls to the floor, disemboweled. Rod flees in a panic and is arrested the next day because he was alone with her in the room at the time of her death and is therefore suspected of having killed his friend.

Nancy continues to have violent nightmares in which she is chased and attacked by the same person, disfigured by burn scars, who had also attacked Tina. These nightmares prompt her to visit Rod in prison, who tells her what he saw in Tina’s mother’s room. To her mother’s dismay, Nancy becomes increasingly convinced that the person she is dreaming about is also Tina’s murderer. She and the skeptical Glen go to the police station late one night to speak to Rod, but find him hanging from a knotted sheet in his cell. Everyone except Nancy assumes it was suicide.

Nancy develops increasingly trouble sleeping; So her mother, Marge, takes her to a sleep clinic. Wired to medical examination equipment in a patient’s bed, Nancy has another terrible nightmare. This time, her arm is injured, but she has also brought something back from her dream: her attacker’s damaged hat. This worries Nancy’s mother, but at the same time, it becomes clear that she is hiding something. Eventually, a drunken Marge reveals to her daughter that the hat belongs to a child killer named Fred Krueger, who killed at least 20 children over a decade ago. Back then, angry and vindictive parents burned Krueger alive in his boiler room after he was acquitted due to a legal error. Now, it seems that Krueger is manipulating their children’s dreams to exact relentless revenge from the grave. Marge assures Nancy, however, that Fred Krueger can no longer harm anyone and pulls her knife glove from a hiding place. She places it prominently on the stove to remind Nancy that Krueger is indeed dead.

Nancy tells Glen her plan to capture Freddy—as he calls himself and is called by a group of girls singing and jumping rope in Nancy’s dreams—and the hat, and then drag them into reality. However, Glen falls asleep on the bed in his teenage bedroom and is killed. Nancy is left alone with Freddy, but manages to drag him with her into the real world. She runs into her house and lures Krueger into traps she has previously set. For example, a mace extended from the ceiling hits Freddy in the pit of the stomach, causing him to fall down the first-floor stairs. After setting fire to her basement using a flammable liquid from a glass bottle, she finally manages to get her father and the rest of the local police force to come to her rescue. But Krueger has escaped from the basement and left flaming footprints on the stairs leading upstairs. Nancy and her father, Police Lieutenant Donald Thompson, follow the footprints and witness Marge Thompson being smothered by Freddy, still on fire. He disappears, leaving behind only her mother’s body. Once alone again, Nancy confronts Fred Krueger and manages to destroy him by turning her back on him, paying him no further attention, allowing the energy he needs to drain away from fear and despair. The next morning, Nancy stands in front of the Thompson family home, alongside her mother, under a bright sun. The curse seems to have ended, and the citizens are back to normal. Glen and the rest of his friends are waiting for her in the car, a convertible, to go to school. It’s only when the car’s hood, which has the same dark green and red colors as Freddy’s sweater, closes and Krueger’s laughter is heard, that she realizes it’s a mistake.
