Description of this Poster Le Schpountz

“Le Schpountz” is a 1938 French film directed by Marcel Pagnol, adapted from a play of the same name. The film tells the story of François, a naive and dreamy young man who dreams of becoming a movie star.

Irénée lives and works in the small grocery store of his childless uncle, who raised him, and dreams of becoming a famous and wealthy movie actor with an exotic car. One day, a film crew stops in the village, and he tries to interest them in his unsung talents. They play on his obsession, call him the village idiot or schpountz, and even give him a fake contract. His uncle mocks his naiveté, and the friendly crew member Françoise warns him not to take it seriously. But Irénée withdraws his savings and, taking the train to Paris, arrives at the studio, from where he is repeatedly thrown out. Françoise, taken pity, finds him a job as a props man.

But the jokers who first trapped him use him again to ruin the take of a pompous actor, Galubert, under the direction of an even more pompous director. Sending him on set causes chaos, but some realize that he is more funny than pitiful, and he is given a role. The film is a success, with audiences preferring Irénée’s comedy to Galubert’s grandeur. The studio director gives him a real contract, which he won’t sign until he has obtained a convertible Peugeot 601 Éclipse, and so he proposes to Françoise. Once married, they both go to his uncle’s village, where he enters the shop alone, in the clothes he left in, telling his uncle that his dream of fame has been false and asking him to come home. The uncle is delighted to be proven right, and Irenaeus then sends for his wife. The uncle is delighted to have someone else working in the shop, until Irenaeus tells him to look at the car outside and thus reveals the truth.
