Description of this Franco Propaganda Poster
This poster titled “El generalisimo” is clearly an allusion to General Franco. The “isimo” here serves as a superlative. We see Franco represented by:
- A skull that aims to show Franco’s cruel and mortuary aspect.
- The Nazi cross that consists of linking Franco to Hitler, or at least supporting him.
- A military outfit with square lines reinforcing Franco’s rigid appearance (cape, sword, spiked helmet, etc.)
This propaganda poster uses a low-angle shot to emphasize Franco’s size.
We see 3 other, smaller characters, holding Franco’s cape like servants:
- A soldier
- A bourgeois
- A priest
According to the communists, they are supposed to represent Franco’s allies: the Church, the bourgeoisie, and the army.
Franco’s build, Its giant appearance displays its authority and the skull indicates danger.
