Description of this The Goonies Poster
The Goonies is a 1985 American adventure film co-produced and directed by Richard Donner from a screenplay by Chris Columbus, based on a story by Steven Spielberg, starring Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, Corey Feldman, Kerri Green, Martha Plimpton, and Ke Huy Quan, and starring John Matuszak, Robert Davi, Anne Ramsey, and Joe Pantoliano in supporting roles. In the film, a group of kids living in the “Goon Docks” neighborhood of Astoria, Oregon, try to save their house from foreclosure. In the process, they discover an old treasure map that leads them on an adventure to unearth the long-lost fortune of One-Eyed Willy, a legendary 17th-century pirate. During the adventure, they are pursued by a family of criminals who want to steal the treasure.
Produced by Spielberg’s company Amblin Entertainment, Warner Bros. released the film theatrically on June 7, 1985, in the United States. The film grossed $125 million worldwide on a $19 million budget and has since become a cult classic. In 2017, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”
Facing the foreclosure of their homes in the “Goon Docks” neighborhood of Astoria, Oregon, for the benefit of an expanding country club, a group of kids who call themselves “the Goonies” (Mikey Walsh, Data, Mouth, and Chunk) gather for one last weekend away.
While searching the Walsh attic, they stumble upon a 1632 doubloon and an old treasure map said to lead to the treasure of the legendary pirate “One-Eyed Willy,” which is said to be somewhere nearby. Mikey considers One-Eyed Willy to be the first Goonie. Seeing the treasure as their last chance to save their home, the kids overpower and tie up Mikey’s older brother Brand and head to an abandoned diner on the coast that matches the map. Brand soon follows, along with Andy, a cheerleader with a crush on him, and Andy’s friend Stef. The group eventually discovers that the abandoned diner is a hideout for the Fratelli crime family: Francis, Jake, and their mother. The Goonies find a tunnel underground and follow it, but Chunk leaves to alert the police. When Chunk flags down a motorist to the sheriff’s station, he is abducted by the Fratellis and imprisoned with their foul-mouthed and deformed younger brother Sloth. The Fratellis interrogate Chunk until he reveals where the Goonies have gone, and they give chase. Chunk is left behind with Sloth and befriends him. After Sloth frees them both, Chunk calls the sheriff, who thinks this is another one of Chunk’s tall tales. Chunk and Sloth follow the Fratellis’ trail.
The Goonies avoid several deadly traps along the tunnels, while staying one step ahead of the Fratellis. They finally reach the cave where Willy’s pirate ship, the Inferno, is anchored. The group discovers the ship is filled with treasure and begins to fill their pockets, but Mikey warns them not to take any from a scale in front of Willy’s skeleton, considering it their tribute to him.
As the Goonies prepare to escape, the Fratellis appear and rob them of their loot. The Fratellis begin tying the Goonies’ hands and making them walk the plank, until Chunk and Sloth arrive and distract the Fratellis long enough for the Goonies to jump overboard and swim for safety. Brand saves Andy from drowning, and they kiss. The Fratellis grab all the treasure they can, including that on Willy’s scales, which triggers another trap that collapses the cave. With Sloth’s help, the Goonies and the Fratellis narrowly escape.
Both groups emerge on Astoria Beach, where the Goonies are reunited with their families and the police. The Fratellis are arrested, but Chunk prevents Sloth from being taken away as well; he invites Sloth to live with him, which Sloth accepts. As Mikey’s father is about to sign the seizure papers, Rosalita, the Walsh housekeeper, discovers that Mikey’s marble bag is filled with gems he took from the boat that were not seized by the Fratellis. Mikey’s father triumphantly tears up the papers, declaring that they have enough money to reverse the seizure.
As the Goonies recount their adventure to the disbelieving press and police, everyone’s attention is drawn to the Inferno, which has broken free of the cave and is majestically sailing off into the distance.
