Description of this Scarface Movie Poster
Scarface is an American feature film by director Brian De Palma, starring Al Pacino. The film is a remake of the 1932 Howard Hawks original, played very loosely by De Palma.
The story, originally based on Al Capone’s rise to gangster boss, has been relocated to Miami in the 1980s and depicts the rise and fall of Cuban immigrant Tony Montana in the world of gangster gangs and cocaine trafficking. However, the personalities of the historical Al Capone and the fictional Tony Montana have little in common. While in the film, the socially incompatible Tony owes his rise almost entirely to his brutality and cold-bloodedness, Al Capone increased his power, in part due to his negotiating skills, with which he was able to bring former rivals to his side through concessions.
The film was initially controversial due to its violent scenes, but became part of pop culture in the following years.
In May 1980, Fidel Castro opened the port of Mariel in Cuba to reunite Cuban and American families. He required boat owners traveling to the United States to take opposition figures, criminals, and the mentally ill with them. At the time, 25,000 of the 125,000 immigrants arriving in Florida had a criminal record (Mariel crisis).
Among them is impoverished ex-convict Antonio “Tony” Montana, who lands in Miami and wants to try his luck in the USA. After a heated conversation with border officials, which ended in an outburst of anger, he is taken to a kind of collective camp, the so-called “Freedom Town.” After killing Rebenga, a former high-ranking communist, during an uprising, the clients ensure that he and some of his friends are released from the camp with a green card.
He initially works as a dishwasher with his friend Manny Ray, but eventually gets the opportunity to get involved in the drug world with Omar Suárez, who had given him the order for the murder. Tony and Manny are supposedly buying cocaine from Colombian drug dealer Hector at the Sun Ray Hotel. In addition to Tony and Manny, Chi Chi and Angel Fernandez also attend the deal. Tony and Angel go to the apartment to secure the belongings while Manny and Chi Chi wait outside. Angel stands at the open door so he can see if everything is okay. Manny is flirting intensely with a young American, so he doesn’t notice that Angel and Tony are ambushed and now threatened with death by Hector if Tony doesn’t give him the money they are supposed to pay for the drugs. However, Tony is not intimidated by Hector’s threats about what his friend Angel must pay for his life: he is brutally murdered with a chainsaw in Hector’s apartment. Manny and Chi Chi notice something is wrong and arrive at the apartment just in time to save Tony and shoot Hector’s accomplices. Armed with the chainsaw, he is initially able to escape, but is pursued by Tony, placed and shot dead in the open street. The three survivors and the cocaine then flee the scene.
Tony and Manny then meet Frank Lopez, for whom Tony killed Rebenga in Freedom Town; Lopez arranged this as revenge for his brother, who had been killed by Rebenga. Lopez introduces Tony to the shop, and Tony quickly makes a name for himself on the streets, which in turn displeases Lopez.
The next stop is Cochabamba, Bolivia, where Tony makes a million-dollar deal with drug lord Alejandro Sosa, during which Lopez’s henchman, Omar, is exposed and murdered as a supposed informant for the drug authorities. However, Tony made the deal without his boss’s approval, which is why the breakup with Lopez occurs. This hits Tony, who has also been keeping an eye on Lopez’s wife, Elvira, with two killers on his neck. Tony shoots both of them and seriously wounds them. He then confronts Frank Lopez, and Manny shoots him. Tony shoots corrupt police officer Mel Bernstein, who worked for Lopez. As a result, he ascends to the ranks of Miami’s gangster kingpin. He builds an empire, marries Elvira, and continues to do business with Sosa. But the money, power, and drug use soon go to his head, and Elvira becomes increasingly critical of him. While counting and delivering a large sum of money to the supposed money launderer Seidelbaum, it turns out he is an undercover investigator, and the process is filmed by the police. Manny had arranged the contact with Seidelbaum but was not present at the access. Ultimately, it is unknown whether Manny knowingly betrayed Tony. Tony suspects him, but ultimately believes in his innocence. Now Tony is threatened with charges and imprisonment, including money laundering. His lawyer specifies that Tony should at least be convicted of tax evasion—a clear allusion to Al Capone. So Sosa offers to buy him off free when he helps him in New York to carry out an assassination attempt by Sosa’s assistant Alberto, which Tony accepts. Back home, an argument escalates with Elvira in a restaurant, who then leaves him. Tony plans the planned assassination attempt with Alberto. When he tries to blow up the target’s car with a remote-controlled bomb, even though his wife and children are inside, Tony foils the attack and shoots Alberto. This is why Sosa breaks up with him.
Back in Miami, Tony can’t find his acting representative, Manny, anywhere. His mother also tells him about the disappearance of his sister Gina, after which he looks for her. When a trail leads him to a house where Manny opens the door and he sees Gina in the background, he realizes the two are in a relationship and spontaneously shoots Manny. The realization that his actions were wrong comes too late. He returns to his villa with his sister, while Sosa’s mercenaries also enter the house. They kill his bodyguards and finally Gina, who tried to shoot Tony. Destroyed on the ground, he picks up an M16 assault rifle with an M203 grenade launcher and faces Sosa’s combat team. He is able to kill many assailants, but is shot several times. Tony provokes the attackers when a Sosa killer, “The Skull,” appears behind him and shoots him in the back with a shotgun. Fatally wounded, Tony falls into a pool of water.
