Description of this Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Poster

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is the first animated feature film from Walt Disney Studios, released in 1937 and based on the Grimm Brothers’ tale, Snow White. Due to its huge success, this fairy tale film formed the basis for many other Disney family animated films. According to the American Film Institute, the film is one of the 100 greatest American films of all time. It is also considered the greatest animated film. The young and beautiful Snow White grows up as a servant in the court of her father and jealous stepmother. The stepmother cannot bear the thought of her stepdaughter becoming more and more beautiful, and therefore more beautiful than her. Therefore, she commissions a huntsman to take the young girl into the forest and kill her there. He goes there with her, but lacks the heart to kill the innocent beauty and lets her escape into the darkness of the forest.

Terrified Snow White wanders through the night and eventually falls asleep. She wakes up the next morning among the forest animals, who lead her to a small house. There she finds clues about seven dwarfs, who, however, have long neglected order and cleaning in the house. Diligently, she sets to work with the animals and puts the house back in order. (In Grimm’s version, however, the dwarfs are quite tidy—Snow White does not need to do any household chores).

Soon afterward, the seven dwarfs finish their work in their gem mine in the nearby mountains and return home, singing happily. They are surprised to find their forest home clean and tidy, even with dinner on the table. Snow White sleeps across their bed and is frightened when the dwarves wake her. But they quickly become friends and decide that the beautiful young woman can stay with the dwarves and do the cleaning in exchange. But the wicked stepmother has learned that Snow White is still alive thanks to her magic mirror. She magically changes her appearance, poisons an apple, and sets off for the dwarves’ cabin, where her unsuspecting stepdaughter kindly welcomes her and accepts the apple. The dwarves find Snow White unconscious and pursue the stepmother, who flees across the mountain in the middle of a thunderstorm. She dies when the slope on which the dwarves place her is struck by lightning and swept away. The grieving dwarves return and bury Snow White in a glass coffin. As they stand before the coffin, a young prince enters and kisses the beauty, who then comes back to life. She lovingly bids farewell to the dwarves and sets off for her new life with her suitor.
