Description of this Vintage Lyon Poster
Originally created in 1887 by Henry Gins, this vintage advertising poster is dedicated to the city of Lyon. The artist shows us the most curious elements of the city, where we can see the Notre Dame de Fourvière basilica, a neo-Gothic cathedral that was completed in 1872. At the time, advertising visuals focused on the most striking places in cities by representing them in medallions, as can be seen in this vintage visual. We can also recognize the Pont du Change as well as the statue of Louis XIV (Place Bellecour). The elegant woman in the foreground seems to be inspecting the various monuments, as the admirer of the poster would do (and perhaps a future traveler!). The fact that it’s a woman is no coincidence: it was generally women who chose travel destinations among the bourgeoisie.
