Description of this Dirty Harry Poster

Dirty Harry is a 1971 American crime thriller film. This San Francisco-set thriller was directed by Don Siegel and is one of the most well-known and influential crime films of all time. It features the unconventional detective “Dirty Harry” Callahan, played by Clint Eastwood, in pursuit of a psychopathic serial killer. The film was inscribed into the Library of Congress’s National Film Registry in 2012.

From the rooftop of a skyscraper, a man shoots dead a young woman swimming in a pool. At the crime scene, the perpetrator leaves a handwritten message announcing that he will kill one person a day if the city doesn’t pay him $100,000. He indicates that he will then kill “a Catholic priest or a Negro,” the message being signed Scorpio. The mayor assigns Detective Inspector Harry Callahan to arrest the killer as quickly as possible. Callahan, a cynical loner, is known for his heavy-handed, yet effective, investigative methods and regularly gets into trouble with his superiors. Detective Inspector Callahan himself often flouts the law to achieve his police objectives.

With his young Mexican partner Gonzales, who is forcibly assigned to the reluctant detective, Callahan embarks on the investigation. Through an advertisement in the San Francisco Chronicle, the city notifies the unknown gunman that it is willing to pay the requested money, while also requesting in the newspaper’s text a deadline to raise the large sum. However, the killer refuses to be persuaded and attempts to kill a young Black man. He is interrupted by the police but manages to escape. Later, he shoots dead a ten-year-old African-American man. The police suspect that Scorpio plans to kill a priest next, as he announced, and set a trap for him. After a nighttime rooftop shootout with Callahan, he escapes and kills a police officer in the process. The next day, the psychopathic Scorpio kidnaps a 14-year-old girl, rapes her, and buries her alive. He increases his ransom demand to $200,000. During the costly ransom delivery, Callahan is chased by Scorpio with a yellow bag containing the money, from phone booth to phone booth through the evening streets and subway stations, through which he receives further instructions. In a dark park, Callahan is brutally beaten by the killer wearing a red balaclava. When his partner Gonzales comes to his aid, he is seriously wounded by gunfire. It is at this moment that Callahan, bleeding on the ground, is able to pull a switchblade from under his pant leg and plunge it into the killer’s leg. With the knife deeply embedded in his thigh, Scorpio limps into the darkness without the money. He takes refuge at a nearby hospital and has his knife wound treated anonymously. At the clinic, Callahan later learns that the killer’s hideout is Kezar Stadium, where Scorpio lives in a modest dwelling. Detective Harry then confronts his adversary in the floodlit football stadium. Disgusted, Callahan extorts the killer’s whereabouts by stepping on the serial killer, who has fallen to the field and is moaning. However, the girl can only be found dead in a hole in the ground – the autopsy reveals that she was murdered shortly after her abduction.

Scorpio is released, as he was deprived of his right to a lawyer and the search of his hiding place was carried out without a judicial warrant, thus rendering all evidence (fruit from the poisonous tree) useless. Callahan pursues Scorpio to catch him committing a criminal act. In a cellar, the mentally ill Scorpio is beaten up for hire by a black-skinned thug and launches a public campaign against Inspector Callahan, accused of arbitrariness and brutality. On this occasion, the scheming Scorpio, whose face is now bandaged with white gauze, claims to the sensationalist press that he was physically abused by Detective Harry Callahan.

Later, Scorpio robs a liquor store and thus obtains money and a weapon. He hijacks a school bus and demands the $200,000 and a plane as well. The mayor wants to pay and forbids Callahan from doing anything against the killer. The latter nevertheless wants to confront Scorpio and manages to stop the bus on his own by jumping from a bridge onto the roof of the school bus. Scorpio flees on foot to a quarry. There, he without hesitation takes a boy fishing by a lake hostage and demands that Callahan put down the revolver he has drawn. Callahan lowers his weapon, but quickly raises it and shoots the killer in the shoulder. When the killer reaches for his pistol lying on the ground again, he is shot by Callahan with the sixth and final bullet from his Smith & Wesson revolver and falls into the water, hit. In the final scene, the detective throws his police badge into the lake.
